What do you like most about being a business owner: Independence, flexibility and the knowledge that I am responsible for my own success or failure. Being self-employed I don't have to do anything that compromises my ethics or principles.
What do you like least about being a business owner: Juggling unexpected problems that are not on the schedule and never reaching the bottom of the agenda.
What do you like most about having a home office: Convenience. Being available to help kids with homework and other problems and the flexibility to attend their events. The commute. The ability to work at any hour of the day or night.
What do you like least about having a home office: The ability to work at any hour of the day or night. Hiring help can be difficult in a home office, both logistically and comfortably.
Advice to anyone who is considering starting a home-based business: Have a large enough office space and make it as comfortable and attractive as possible. You are going to spend your life in there. Have extra staplers, tape and rulers. They disappear. Don't answer your phone at 2:00 in the morning. It's probably somebody from New Zealand.
Biggest business mistake: Trying to do too much myself. I am still making this mistake.
What two or three personal characteristics are most critical to your success: Trust, reliability, flexibility and honesty. And a low tolerance for petty nonsense.
Advice that you try to live by: 1. Everything happens for a reason. 2. Actions speak louder than words.
